Objective C is probably easier to learn than C, but only because - TopicsExpress

Objective C is probably easier to learn than C, but only because it is a smaller subset of a very large, very complex language. Ive heard Objective C was difficult. It is harder because there arent a lot of free code samples out there. Apple locks down its devices and has the cult-like devotion of its developers and programmers. So you do not have open-source Objective C projects to study like PHP and Python. And it isnt like you can slap together Objective C apps and test it on your locked iPhone. At least resetting to factory defaults is an easy fix. Assuming youve backed it all up to the cloud, sure. But breaking the iPhone to practice Objective C development will void the warranty with the Genius Bar. Yet Ive heard people say you could learn it in an hour or two. If you already know C, you could pick up Apples syntax that fast. If you dont know C, youre facing a steep learning curve. What about C++ or C#? Both of those C versions are narrower versions of the C language, but knowing those will make it easier to learn Objective C. But C sharp is a bigger adjustment, since you have to unlearn the dot-net framework and Microsoft rules. Microsoft doesnt rule. I meant, C sharp is primarily Microsofts servers and Sharepoint servers, whereas Objective C is 95% Apple. I thought Objective C was a superset of C. Theoretically, any C program should be able to run as Objective C, though Objective C doesnt use all the original commands. In reality, between changes for Smalltalk and its flexible typing, it is really different. Flexible is my type of language. I think you could learn Objective C in a long weekend if you already know C, so you can learn to handle its typing rules, syntax and message handling. Otherwise, you can learn it in 30 minutes a day for a few months.
