Observation: Sister General loved God, Jesus, and the church and it was through her that I joined church at an early age. I was active in many different church organizations, and even became a Sunday School teacher (yeah, we can talk about that later). Since she also taught, we would often go over the lesson on Saturday night or at breakfast Sunday morning. I recall a particular Sunday where the pastors sermon was nothing remotely close to what my grandmother and I had discussed. So surely the pastor was wrong! My grandmother had a direct phone line to God himself! I believed the exact order of holiness was God, Jesus Christ, The Holy Ghost, then Sis. General! So, when I questioned her on why the pastor didnt know what he was talking about, I almost got a whooping and ended up gettting a lesson on interpretation, doing your own research, and she threw in Listen to the message, if not the messenger for good measure. Those, along with many other lessons throughout the years, helped mold me and guide me through life. Its why I try not to be too judgmental because your perception is just different from mine. Its why I can hear what you say,but still google it later to see for myself. And thats why I can listen to the message, if not the messenger. Its also why my best Sundays are those I attend church. Its also why my best weeks are those that start off in church. Its also why no matter what I do, or how long I stay away, I always find myself back in church. I dont dwell on the failings of some of these men in the pulpit because its the message, not the messenger. I have plenty of friends who practice other faiths. I have friends who dont believe in organized religion at all. There will be some who may reply to this that have totally different beliefs. But, Ill tell you what I believe. I believe Gospel music makes my heart dance. I believe a good sermon can change your entire outlook on life. I believe any organization that teaches you to be a better person, do the right thing and love one another cant be all bad. Some of the messengers, yes. Some of the members, yes. But not the message. The message is solid. Twisted, misinterpreted, or ignored. Solid. So, this is not a plea for those that dont believe to join a church. Its not a request to attend my church and become a member. Nor is it a snub for those that choose not to believe at all. Its my way of telling you why I am the way that I am. And despite our differences, its why I still call you friend. Be a better person. Do the right thing. Love one another. You dont have to like the messenger, but I hope you like the message.
