Oct. 24, 2013, Movie of the Night: Tucker & Dale vs Evil (2010). I think that I have to start this review by thanking the horror movie gods for hearing my complaints about stupid college kids in horror films, because this movie takes all of those cliches, turns them on their heads, and all for big laughs. Tucker and Dale are two good ole boys from West Virginia who are going out to a summer cabin that Tucker has just purchased as a summer fishing home. The two are good natured and well mannered simple farm boys, but because of the way they dress and behave at times they are commonly thought of as idiot hillbillies by outsiders. On their trip up to the cabin they meet a group of typical horror film cliché college kids, who instantly label them as dangerous inbred hicks. Truth be told, Dale is enamored with a girl in the group named Allison, and is actually trying to get up the nerve to talk to her, with support from Tucker, who claims that life is short, and Dale needs to go out and seize what he wants in life, and not let himself be dragged down by an inferiority complex. Dale finally gives it a try, but is so nervous and giggly, he comes off sounding crazy. Later, as Tucker and Dale are fishing late at night, the college kids decide to skinny dip at the same lake. Tucker and Dale come across Allison getting undressed on a tall rock on the edge of the lake, and Dale, being the nice gentleman he is, covers his eyes, and starts pleading with Tucker for them to leave and give her privacy. Allison overhears this, gets startled, and trips and falls into the water, hitting her head. Dale dives in to save her, while Tucker tries to get the attention of the other kids. However, all they see is two country bumpkins loading their undressed friend into their boat, so they freak out and run away. Not knowing what to do, Tucker and Dale take her back to the cabin. The next morning, when she wakes up, she is at first scared, but then realizes that the two of them are just simple nice guys, especially after Dale brings her breakfast in bed. However, the college kids have let their imaginations run wild with what has happened to Allison, and begin a plan to get her back from the hillbilly kidnappers. One of them decides to sneak up to the cabin, and see what the situation is. While this is happening, Tucker is in the back yard clearing away a dead tree with his chainsaw, and while cutting into a hollowed out section, he ends up cutting through a beehive, which immediately causes a swarm of bees to attack him. Tucker begins running and waving his chainsaw around as he frantically tries to avoid the bees, but ends up encountering a the college kid, who thinks that Tucker is crazy, and trying to kill him. As Tucker runs away from the bees, the kid runs away from Tucker and ends up accidentally impaling himself on a broken tree branch, while Tucker keeps running, totally oblivious to what has just happened to the kid. But now the other college kids agree that they need to save their friend from her abductors, and the roles are reversed as the college kids become the hunters, and Tucker, Dale, and Allison are absolutely oblivious, and it only gets crazier from there. This is an incredibly funny dark comedy/horror hybrid, that takes all of the horror cliches I hate, and makes them an absolute joke. The college kids are all stereotypical morons, with several of them looking like the cast of Jersey Shore and I just loved to see the levels of stupidity they descend to, all out of complete misunderstandings or jumping to conclusions. I really have nothing bad or nit picky to say about this film, because I was laughing the whole time. This is definitely one I recommend if you are looking for a fun Halloween horror/comedy.
