October 3, 2013 10 YEARS OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ACTIVISM IN ASIA Health Care Without Harm is celebrating its ten years in the Asia region. HCWH-Asia is part of an international coalition with over 500 member organization in 53 countries working to transform the health care sector world-wide, without compromising patient safety or care, so that it becomes ecologically sustainable and a leading advocate for environmental health and justice. The group has lined-up several activities for the month of October. October 14, Monday 10:30 AM, Office of Senator Loren Legarda, Philippine Senate HCWH President and Founder Gary Cohen meets with Senator Loren Legarda to talk about mainstreaming climate change issue from the public health perspective. Cohen is an advocate and pioneer in environmental health movement for the last thirty years and was recently named Champion of Change in the category of Climate and Health by U.S. President Barrack Obama. The award is given to leaders who are making the link between climate and health and helping the health sector lead the effort to reduce their contributions to climate change and prepare their communities for threats to health related to climate change. 6:30 PM, Medical Ecology Forum, Acacia Hotel, 5400 East Asia Drive corner Commerce Avenue, FIlinvest Corporate City, Alabang Muntinlupa City Forum with the Philippine College of Physicians – Southern Luzon Chapter. In 2011, the Philippine College of Physicians national and Southern Luzon chapters adopted HCWH-Asia’s BURN NOT campaign committing to encourage all its members to prevent move by the government to revive burning of medical wastes. This year, PCP-SL is committed to work together in bringing the issue of climate change in the radar of the health care practitioners. PCP-SL together with other medical organizations will sign the Doctors declaration on climate change. October 15, Tuesday, Cocoon Boutique Hotel, 61 Scout Tobias, Quezon City 8:00 AM – Green Hospitals Asia Conference 2013 Topics to be discussed include: Impact of climate change in public health, Response of Philippine Climate Change Commission and Global Green and Healthy Hospitals. October 16, Philippine Heart Center 9:00 AM – HCWH-Asia visits the Philippine Heart Center. In 2009, PHC received the 1st Do No Harm Award for mercury phase-out in health care. Early this year, PHC became a member of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) Network. On this visit, PHC will showcase some of its initiative in greening their facility.
