October 4, 2013 – Friday Psalm 37:1-2 1 Do not fret because of the wicked; do not be envious of wrongdoers, 2 for they will soon fade like the grass, and wither like the green herb. YOUR GOOD NAME IS YOUR BEST CAPITAL My father died when I was fifteen and though I did not have him as long as I would have liked, he taught me many important lessons. My parents both worked and provided us with what we needed. I recall a time when the family car needed new tires and there was not enough in the bank to make the purchase. In those days most merchants would extend credit to people they trusted. At the tire store that day new tires were installed with a hand shake. While we waited on our car a wealthy business owner came in and wanted to change the manufacture installed tires on his new Cadillac and asked for thirty days credit. The owner of the tire store very bluntly stated credit would not be given because he could not trust the man’s word. When the man drove up in his shiny new Cadillac I was envious because we just had an old turquoise Chevy. However, I learned that day that there are more important things than the appearance of wealth. A good reputation is by far more valuable. PRAYER Gracious God, guide us to be people of integrity. We may be envious of the things that some people have gained through dishonest means, but things fade away. A good reputation of honesty and integrity are worth more and will last longer than dishonest gains. As Christians guide us to reflect the family’s good name. In you good name we pray. Amen.
