October 9, 2006 my world took a drastic turn. You see, when something is such a part of you it is impossible to be complete without it. I was 26 and my dream finally came true. I owned my very own horse! 2 weeks later that 1100lb dream became a nightmare. My body was broken, my head was lost and my heart was shattered. I was thrown from that horse so fast I didnt know what hit me. As he galloped off down the trail I lay in a heap on the ground in complete disbelief. My body and mind were in shock, then reality set in. It was really really bad. 3 major surgeries and 8 months later I was ready to start riding again, or so I thought. I was consumed with fear. That horse and I were never going to see eye to eye, I was afraid and he knew it. I battled with the thought of even getting back on a horse but knew I would never be fulfilled without them in my life. 3 special horses have given me the passion for horses back and I am enjoying them more than ever! Ferdi came into my life as a 20 year old retired school master & kids lesson horse. When I first saw him standing in the pasture I had a hard time believing that this stunning 16 hand bay Dutch Warmblood could possibly have my best interest at heart. He was just too damn good looking! But Ferdi knew when to push me and knew when to nurture. We circled in the ring day after day and slowly but surely it started to feel natural again. It wasnt that I lacked confidence, I had absolutely none at all. He taught me to trust horses again. I dont think he knows how to do anything wrong. Phoenix, my spunky little grade chestnut, brought me the next leg of my journey. He took me back out on trail and we enjoyed the hunt pace world for a while. Phoenix helped me grow my confidence immensely. He is a little firecracker with tons of personality. Not the most athletic horse in the world but he has the heart of a lion and would lay down his life for me. Getcha Good finally helped me accomplish what I set out to do. He is a flashy Arabian who loves his job and has become my endurance partner and best friend. While he has quite a bit of energy and can get really up at rides has proven to be as honest as they come. 8 years after an accident that had me questioning if I would ever ride again, Getcha and I have just completed our 11th 50 mile ride together and have earned over 550 AERC miles. Every bad experience can lead to something good. It hasnt been an easy road and I doubt I will ever get past the moment of hesitation each time I get in the saddle but I have been blessed to have my 3 boys to help me along. Ferdi my head...Phoenix my heart...Getcha my soul. A lot of people ask how can I ride again after my accident and my usual response is Because there is nothing like the feeling of flying on 4 legs!
