Odd meter in country?!? One of my students asked me today what meter is the verse of Zac Brown Bands Uncaged. After a quick listen, I feel it in 7+7+2, or in other words (4+3)+(4+3)+2 (i.e., 4/4+3/4+4/4+3/4+2/4). The hi-hat plays quarter notes, and the snare is on 2, 4, &of 1, & of 3). With that syncopation, the two bars of 7/4 (4/4+3/4) feels like 4 bars of 7/8 with the SD hitting on 3 and 7. Then, the 2/4 is tacked on at the end. Although that adds up to 16 beats, its not the usual 4 bars of 4/4 with SD on the backbeat, but something much more interesting. It starts at 40 seconds: youtu.be/gbIJeMniHKU?t=40s
