Of the different formations within the cave Lehman Caves boasts a large number (over 300) “cave shield” formations. These formations are rarer than most and resemble circular plates that can grow at any angle. They form as mineral laced water is forced through fissures in the cave. They are often topped with helictites and adorned with stalagtites below that grow from holes in the bottom of the shield or by overflowing its rim. 1. This cave shield grows at and angle upward from the wall. 2. This pair of shields grow at an angle downward from the wall. 3. This very large, reddish shield has many “lines” of stalagtites that grew through holes in the shields bottom. 4. You should see several shield formations in this photo. The large golden shield near the center has stalagtites that formed from water overflowing the shield formation. This one is nicknamed the “parachute” and is 5 foot tall.
