We caught up with the band to ask them what inspired such a bold move, as well as checking their Apple-loving credentials… What was the inspiration behind the iPhone recording? ADAM: We had heard about a new application called FourTrack, and thought that it would be a great way to record ideas while we were on tour. Soon after we discovered the application, my friend at Apple called me and suggested that if we could record a song on the phone, that we would be the first band to do anything like that. We’re always up for trying new things like that, so we planned a day to get together at Anthony’s house, picked a song to record, figured out how to use the application that day, and finished the song in just a few hours. We also wanted to film the process, and posted a “Making Of” video on our YouTube page (youtube/ilovethe88). Interview: The 88 You’re obviously iPhone users, what other Apple products do you like/own? ADAM: My answer would be a lot shorter if you asked what Apple products do I “not” own. I’m a fan of practically everything they put out. I’ve been recording and mixing music on Macs for over 10 years now. I don’t know how we would survive on tour without our iPods (as I look behind me and see the other three guys listening to theirs as I type this.) Have you bought an iPad yet? ADAM: My laptop and iPhone is a perfect combination for me. I think the iPad could be cool to take on a plane, but I don’t foresee getting one at any time soon. Which apps do you play on your iPhone when you’re not recording hit songs on it? ADAM: I like some of the camera apps on the iPhone, like Hipstamatic and Polarize. We use those to post photos on our Facebook page (facebook/the88). I’m also kinda nerdy and enjoy playing word games like Scramble and Scrabble. Are there any plans to use the iPhone live, there are some great guitar, bass, drum and synth apps on there? ADAM: I’ve seen it done before where every member of a band plays a different instrument on the iPhone. I’ve always wanted to try that out. We’ll use the iPhone to sometimes record our rehearsals or even put down ideas while we’re driving around. How do you feel about the migration to digital music and digital music stores? – A lot of bands prefer to sell whole albums rather than individual tracks… TODD: I think that you have to start with the fact that music is now digital. Period. You can spend time recording a whole record, sequencing it just right trying to create a cohesive feeling, but at the end of the day, it is individual songs are going to be shared and listened to. If someone wants to buy digital music, the artist should consider themselves lucky because it’s just as easy to download it without paying for it, which is ok too. Do you think iTunes has helped you reach a wider audience? ADAM: It definitely has. I’ve noticed that people have been buying our music all over the world through iTunes. For a band that doesn’t have a label, they instantly have world-wide distribution by getting their music on iTunes. Tell us what you’re promoting at the moment? ADAM: We’re in England touring with Ray Davies. We did a month of shows with him in the U.S., and then he invited us to play with him out here. It’s been a dream come true for our band since he’s one of our favourite songwriters of all time. On the U.S. dates, we were his backing band for his encore, so we got to play Kinks songs with him, which was very surreal. When we get back home, we’re going to master our new album that we just finished mixing. Then we come back out here to play at the Wireless Festival on July 2nd, which we are all very excited abou
