Oh, I knew I was right to fancy this bloke so much! I recall once in the Tea Room I went to fetch a newspaper. Thatcher was sitting at a table, surrounded by a dozen braying acolytes. As I passed, a plummy voice sounded: “Here’s Skinner. He’s got all the answers. He went to grammar school.” This smart-alec Tory clearly didn’t know, or had forgotten, that Thatcher was a grammar girl. So I stopped. “She went to one as well,” I said, pointing at Thatcher. “Do you agree with what they are saying, deriding grammar schools?” Nobody said a word. There was stunned silence. Thatcher herself didn’t reply. The acolytes looked sheepish. Attack, as always, was the best form of defence. “You had to swot to get to grammar school,” I said. The now distinctly unmerry band, including Thatcher herself, said nothing. “In my case it was a higher grade school and I got a county minor scholarship at 10,” I added. “Did you, Maggie?”
