Oh ! My Shoes ! During my childhood days, the distance between our house near Dn. NO. 3 on Benjamin Road and my school ( Arya High School , away from Daseri Grounds ) was almost 3 KM . Walking the distance to and fro was quite boring and irksome especially under the scorching heat of summers sun. I had devised a way to wean away this boredom. On daily basis, I marked a somewhat round stone and kicked it like a ball onwards to my way to school and back home. Sometimes out of frustration I used all the names including ( learned from society) like teri bain, teri mann which otherwise armed me with an extra force of vengeance. At occasions, the stone fell into a roadside nallah and sometimes it got hidden somewhere. I could not retrieve or locate it thereafter and that is the reason it never reached the end point, but by that time I had had covered more than half the distance. The outcome of the above daily playful game was that my shoes gave way every now and then and every two months I needed a new pair. My eldest brother Kakaji ( Sh. Dharam Parkash) , after examining my shoes once, at a close look, established the exact cause. Next time, he took me to a Bata Shop and bought for me a pair of Russian Snow Boots, export quality which were very sturdy and heavy. Now I became a bit careful, but still, it continued with a gap of a few days. The upper black crust of the leather lost shine and a white patch appeared which was discernible from a distance and even Cherry polish could not conceal it. Thereupon, I might have got a good thrashing from someone elder, and thereafter for some days I was escorted by my father on his way to office, on his bicycle. Later in life, I was destined to wear these heavy shoes ( of manly size) once again in the Army for almost six years. I had to carry them home after release.
