Oh dear. Police in Liverpool have launched an investigation into racist abuse directed at Reds striker Mario Balotelli after he posted a wry Tweet over Manchester Uniteds crushing defeat by Leicester. Balotelli posted Man Utd...LOL on Twitter feed just minutes after United went down 5 - 2 against Premiership the new boys at the King Power Stadium. But as soon as the Italian international fired-off his three-word comment he found himself on the receiving end of barrage of racist replies. Many appeared to want to shock Balotelli, describing him as a monkey, the same kind of abuse he endured whilst playing in Italy. In May, the World Cup preparations of the Italian side were disrupted when police had to disperse a crowd directing racist taunts at the player who was then part of the AC Milan squad. In 2013, Balotelli and Kevin Prince-Boateng were targeted by Roma fans. Reacting to that incident, Balotelli warned that he would walk off the pitch were he ever to experience racist abuse again. The racism this time was highlighted by lots of social media users, with many tweeting their disgust at the racism. Merseyside Police confirmed that they are investigating the incident, with a number of accounts from which the abuse originated having been closed down. In a statement the force said: Merseyside Police can confirm an investigation is underway following racist comments made on social media earlier today (Sunday, 21 September) Officers were made aware of the comments on Mario Balotellis Twitter account at about 4.30pm No formal complaint has been received from the club or player at this time, however officers are making enquiries into the matter. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Merseyside Police on the 101 number.
