Oh my goodness! I just heard my grade school music teacher and beginning band director passed away. I just saw him last January at the IMEA convention. Im so glad I had that last, brief, conversation with him. Its because of him, I found the first, and still largely only, thing that I was confident in. And not just confidence in an activity, but a confidence in myself. I was NOT a confident or outgoing kid before 5th grade. This one thing that made me feel like I had value and something to offer. This one thing that kept me grounded during many times of upheaval in my childhood and adolescence. That one thing where I knew I not only belonged, but where others counted on me; where I was needed, important. A big reason why I do what i do......and it was because of Mr. Harry Rutter, in a little grade school in the middle of a cornfield in Venedy, IL.
