Ok guys some history of Claremont speedway record holders THE HISTORY The following article by Speedway historian Ken Brown appeared in the Claremont Speedway Programme of 5th February 1987—The Americas Cup Festival of Sport Inaugural World Sprintcar Championships. The start of the 1960s saw the beginning of the Hot Rod era with those machines being the forerunner of today’s powerful Sprintcars. During the 1961-62 season these cars were called Drag Cars and their specifications were fairly straight forward. All the glass and upholstery had to be removed and the bucket seats which were then required had to be bolted or welded to the chassis. An approved safety harness had to be fitted with rollbars being mandatory as was a firewall between the motor and the cab. The doors had to bolted or welded together as an added safety standard. Bumper bars had to be rounded at the ends and finally brakes on two wheels had to be fitted and working. Once these simple alterations were made one could go racing. The coupe designed vehicles proved a worthy addition to the Speedway ranks with some of the first drivers to put together impressive driving displays including Johnny Leopold in a Ford V8 along with the likes of Roy Garvey, Ray Geneve, Val Drage and Jimmy Matta. The following summer (the 1962-63 season) a name change took place with this section of racing being called Hot Rods with car numbers and racing action increasing. During that season the Speedway closed for several weeks over the Christmas, New Year period and in that time a safety fence was installed. The Speedway re-opened on Friday 11 January 1963 with the first appearance of the newly called Hot Rod section. Eight cars took part in the first night’s racing with Trevor Kenworthy winning the Feature Race from Ben Ludlow snr and Johnny Leopold. Several weeks later the new class had gained a great deal in popularity and the Speedway management decided that a State Championship should be run, so on Friday 15 February 1963 the first WA Hot Rod Title was contested. All eight cars took part in the history making event with a large crowd in attendance. Roy Garvey became the first State Champion with Johnny Leopold runner-up. Opening night of the 1963-64 campaign saw the programming of a car number 14, a V8 powered machine driven by a new competitor on the scene named Alf Barbagallo. It took several weeks for the commentators of the day to pronounce his name correctly but once Alf started winning races, the commentators soon got used to praising this young up and coming star. As well as the previously mentioned drivers, the crowds were also cheering for other competitors such as Laurie Hillary, Guy Glamuzina, Reg Leach and Rod Hooper. This was the time when the old coupe style cars were giving way for the home-made specials and soon it was time to programme them in two separate sections - Hot Rods and Stock Rods. The 1964-65 season saw the term Super Modified introduced for the first time and the combining of both sections. The first visiting driver to appear at Claremont was a New South Wales competitor Ray Forrest who made several appearances on the West Coast and won a Claremont Feature Race. But the man who set the local scene on fire and was largely responsible for making the Western Australian division progress rapidly in car design was the San Jose Californian driver Marshall Sargent. Driving a powerful ill-handling “beast” Sargent roared around the Claremont circuit in 22 seconds - a feat that was unheard of in Super Modifieds at that time. The American actually lapped Claremont in times that were faster than those set by a Speedcar—another unheard of occurrence, as Speedcars were the number one division then—during his tours of 1964 and 1965. His visits soon saw local drivers appearing in similar type vehicles with one of the most famous early Western Australian creations being a Buick Wildcat pedalled by Laurie Hillary. Former Victorian Sidecar great Bill Sullivan became another favourite with the fans of this era, along with Barbagallo who was now winning races on a regular basis driving a white Valiant powered car carrying the familiar #77. The local “Mod Squad” as they were called in those days responded well to assalts from such nationally known stars as East Coast’s Australian champions Dick Briton and Bill Warner in the mid 1960s and South Australians Ray Skipper and Bill Wigzell who toured later in that decade. The top Western Australian competitors of that era included Barbagallo, Ray Geneve, Bill Sullivan, Trevor Kenworthy, David Rockford and Jimmy Matta. The Super Modifieds remained unchanged during that time until early in the 1970s when American Johnny Anderson ventured down-under in a new controversial machine race fans back in the USA were calling Sprintcars. From the time that car first turned a wheel in competition in Australia a whole new ball game had begun. As far as race car technology was concerned, it was a classic case of he came, he saw and he conquered. This new machine was almost unbeatable and the Super Modified division was about to undergo its biggest change in the history of the section. Before Anderson returned to the US, a young driver at the time named Garry Rush purchased the car. Back in Western Australia the introduction of a similar car was to change the direction of the local racing scene. That car was the Geoff Brown number 22 Sprintcar built to American specifications and wearing the colours of Brown’s favourite football team Richmond. Bill Sullivan drove the car and although the machine did not dominate the racing like the superiority shown by the Anderson car, it did motivate many local drivers to start work building their own versions of the newly shaped beast. The running of the Craven Filter National Super Modified Championship at Claremont Speedway during the summer of 1972-73 saw the first WA appearance of the ex Anderson Sprintcar driven by Garry Rush. Although the Rush machine did not win the title it put together an impressive display of racing which was enough to convince the locals that Sprintcars held the answer for the future. The next summer Alf Barbagallo had a fully imported American Sprintcar ready for competition and the wealthy farmer Noel Bradford soon followed the trend. Barbagallos Edmunds racer was at the time the latest in American technology. It was not until the season of 1975-76 that the division was officially called Sprintcars in this State. During that season the West Australian drivers became renowned as one of the most competitive states in Sprintcar racing with Noel Bradford winning the 1976 Australian Title in Tasmania, completely dominating the championships. The following season the Australian Title was allocated to the West and was run at Bunbury Speedway due to the Claremont promotion at the time having a dispute over the use of clutches with the State Super Modified/Sprintcar body. New South Welshman Garry Rush drove to victory at Bunbury in an ex. Alf Barbagallo Trostle Sprintcar, sold to Sydneys Sid Moore only a week before the title. It was now the era of the Sprintcar.
