Ok here is the first post to this group! Christopher Roy, Professor of the History of Art at University of Iowa, very kindly talked to me about Ashanti metal casting today. The Ashanti are the only other group (besides the casters in India) I have been able to locate who practice the luted crucible method. I asked about the division of labor in the casting community. He explained that originally, metal workers, including blacksmiths, werent allowed to farm. If they made a hoe they could help themselves to grain. This practiced was abolished in the colonial period so metal workers could pay tax to the state. Now, as in India, they farm part time and cast part time. Could this be the same series of events for the Indian metal casters? Have a look at Chris video, the section on casting starts at about 57 minutes. https://youtube/watch?v=ivjDgzT9CYk
