Ok, interested in opinions. In this article, Women Against Rape (WAR) make a statement. They had been supporting the woman through the initial allegations she made against her boyfriend of the time, and its now apparently come out that the woman made a series of false allegations as an excuse for performing poorly in barrister training. (TW, rape) Im confused by their statement. The section dealing with them reads thus: *** The campaign group Women Against Rape (War), which has supported Brooker, 30, claimed the police and Crown Prosecution Service put more resources into such cases than into investigating violent crimes including rape. A War spokesperson said the prosecution of Brooker was completely disproportionate, adding: Time and again we see police resources diverted from rape and put into prosecuting women instead. War argues that such prosecutions can deter women from reporting rape and domestic abuse. The spokesperson said: We must bring an end to these witch hunts. If the authorities want to turn the clock back and put women off from coming forward, prosecutions like this are a very effective deterrent. *** I agree with the vast majority of what theyre saying, but two things leap out at me. Id like to hear opinions, most particularly from my female and trans* friends, on two things: a) Whilst the broad social problem they describe is a huge and very real thing to tackle, Im uncomfortable with the fact that they dont address this womans individual actions or take any moral stance on it b) From the text of the article, Im not convinced the prosecution against her *is* disproportionate. There may be huge undercurrents to the case that arent reported here, I guess. All opinions welcomed, but in the interests of civility Id rather you addressed me with your isolated opinion rather than responding to someone elses. Im not looking to build a consensus or arbitrate a moral dispute. Ill just take this shit down if it descends into murky horribleness.
