Ok, so Ill just continue till we all get tired of reading stories and in my case.. typing as well haha. Todays pick is Radiator. The first collaboration I did with Radion 6. In the period I was kinda lost, as I mentioned in the Past Present Future post, Spinnin Records opted the idea to collaborate with people I didnt work with yet. They knew I wasnt keen on doing to much collaborations, but I understood where they where coming from so I accepted the idea they offered me. Jorn at Spinnin Records is an extremely laid back and cool guy and has always guided me very well. This was one of those situations where an A&R manager made the difference. Also the reason why till this day I am open to criticism and opinions from them. Good or bad and with that have a lot of respect for them. So the routine basically was, meeting up at 11am and get a large coffee going on then talk about regular things and then hit the studio and just go with the flow. With Radiator the first thing we did was to make the melody. The synths used for this sound are the Surge VSTi, NI Massive and the TAL U-NO LX. We also used these in the follow up Another Heater. After that we recorded a 1 bar audio snippet of the lead and played around with it. This brings us to the build up of the track. It literally is the same melody as in the breakdown, but filtered and altered with fx and sidechain compression. We added a dirty gritty loop and the claps as percussion + we made a little perc loop. Then pulled out my beloved Trilogy and the Riel preset to make the bass line in a _---_---_---_--- pattern during the build with a bit of groove and sidechain compression. This changes later on in the track to a __--__--__--__-- pattern. The bass-line also has a bit of distortion on it to add a bit more body to it. Not much tho. We got to a point where we had a solid and tech drive, but added a synth sequence with some wide open delays to give it a bit more depth and let us be able to extend the build a bit before we went in to the breakdown. We also did another recording of the lead but then only using the lower keys and the Massive opened up as well to give it that bassy screechy sound. Thats what we placed right before the breakdown kicks in. Added a simple string pattern with loads of fx and side chain compression triggered by the kick thats hearable in the track. After that things just flowed along really fast. We made some short edits of the lead and placed them randomly through out the track and thats about it. Overall we spend about 5 hours on this track. Literally 5 hours and it was done. Spinnin Records loved it and released it on Oxygen Recordings. I remember pitching the track to Armin van Buuren for his sets and ASOT as I do with all tracks. As always the waiting game starts the minute you press send email What I got back was the following and I quote. WHAT A BOMMBBBBBBBBB Next thing I knew he dropped it at EDC in LA on 06-26-2010 and people sent me a video of that moment.. Im actually watching that video as Im writing this and it still gives me goosebumps till this day. Never getting used to this stuff. That was the story of Radiator. I wish there was more to it, but sometimes it all is just so simple and goes so fast… Used Gear Leads: Ni Massive & Surge VSTi & TAL-U-NO LX Bass: Trilogy Additional Synth: TAL-U-NO LX Fx: Cubase SX standard delays and reverbs Heres Radiator https://youtube/watch?v=Mc2eKuqI1p0
