Ok this is going to seem strange to most of you that I would even mention this....but...the world just lost one of its most special athletes. I am honored to have been alive to watch Tony Gwynn play baseball. He was not my hero (Reggie Jackson) and he was not real flashy or demanded a lot of attention. I would argue that Tony Gwynn was the best hitter to ever play the game. In his first full year in the major leagues, he only struck out 26 times out of 606 plate appearances and finished with a .351 batting average. By comparison, a .250 average is considered average and there are guys that strike out well over 100-200 times in a season, every season. The main reason I wanted to mention him is that there are very few instances in your life that you can point to something and say....that is special....that is unique. While Tony Gwynn did not have the same kind of accolades as people like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods (before he went crazy), Tony Gwynn was clearly one of those very very special athletes that defied logic and reason. Tony was a God fearing man and he lived his life with great respect and honor.
