Ok time for another rant. I am sick of all the news hype regarding Ebola. Because of all this hype so many people are panicking and think that this disease is going to wipe out the worlds population in a very short time and that no one is able to come up with a vaccine for it. But before I get to the true facts of Ebola I want to share with you some interesting facts about well known diseases that continue to kill people world wide even though there are vaccines for them and before you dismiss my claims, my research has come direct from the WHO World Health Organisation. So far in 2014 Pertussis Whooping Cough, has had 16 million recorded cases with 200,000 deaths world wide. Last year in Australia there were 13,000 recorded cases of pertussis with 65 deaths. There has been 5 million cases of severe flu and by severe Im talking about being admitted to ICU or HDU with 500,000 deaths. Measles has resulted in 20 million cases and around 130,000 deaths. As far as Ebola goes there has been 9,900 recorded, cases with 4,900 deaths. They are working on vaccines and will start trialling several of them in a couple of months. Given the strict measures of disease control with the Ebola virus this illness is NOT going to run rampant in all communities around the world in the coming weeks or months as some hysterical journalists have claimed. Yes its a certainty that more people will die as a result of Ebola but MORE are dying from preventable diseases. Chill people the WHO has got it covered. Just dont be silly and travel to effected areas and as an RN would, I, nurse a patient with Ebola? Yes because thats my job but I would certainly adhere to the PPE protocol so as not to put myself or anyone else in harms way. The disease is not airborne and one of the nurses who died after looking after her Ebola patient in Texas touched an unprotected area of her face with her gloved hand after attending to her patient. But as sad as her death was it has taught us so much more about the disease. There, rant over.
