Ok troops here is my race report from yesterdays half Ironman, first thanks a mill for all the support in the lead up and post race quiet frankly its been overwhelming to say the least. It very much appreciated. Had an amazing swim was actually being conservative but there was a bit of tide assistance and the time probably looked a little faster than it was but 22.05 for 1.9 k at 1.09 pace was still really nice to see. Had a terrible first transition was fumbling and farting around like an old man (thats rig I am), got out onto the bike course and just need to say the bike the boys prepared for me was simply stunning Gary Suckling and the crew at Riders Choice gave me a weapon to sit on. Felt really strong and had pretty good pace my training times had me expecting to ride between 2 hours 15 min and 2.20 and that was pretty much spot on came in at 2.19 averaging 38.66 kmh for the 90 km. At this point I was still feeling really good and looking forward to the half marathon but as I got off the bike and started running into T 2 both hamstrings cramped to the point I had to lie down in transition trying to get my running shoes on. I managed to get my self organised and was just hoping it would run itself out and I could get my rhythm and be on my way but unfortunately I ran the entire 21 km with my legs on the cusp of cramp and spasm, my heart rate was good my mind was good but the body wasnt letting me execute in a physical sense. Once again my training times had me expecting to run between a 1.40 and 1.45 half marathon and I ended up running 2.05 which was a real downer for me as I was hoping to be closer to 4.30 for the day. It was stiflingly hot at around 36 degrees and I finished in 4.52 which Im still really proud of but left with that feeling of having un finished business and wanting to get it all right next start. The Cherry on top of the cake came by going to roll down and getting a spot on the oz team for worlds in Austria. The highlife of the day though was running across the finish line with a Levi and my wife Elle Brooks when she crossed the line in her first proper triathlon having overcome so many hurdles to get there....what she did blew me away yesterday so much grit and determination to make sure she honoured her commitment to Levi to give him her finishers medal.
