Okay. Well. That couldnt have gone any more Rachel in any way, had I planned it, even. I started the marathon, felt absolutely *horrible* at first, but warmed up pretty nicely. By miles 7-12 I was feeling fantastic and really thought I had a good shot at finishing with a decent time, even! I started to visualize the whole finish line celebration, and everything. It was fabulous. In my head. And then... Those of you who know me will nod, knowingly... Here it comes - I missed the turn-off. I dont know how I managed - apparently there were signs, and allegedly even volunteers, or so Im told. But somehow, some way, I missed all of it. I ran right past it all. Probably with a big smile on my face, even. I continued on, completing the 1/2 marathon, absolutely baffled as to why there were crowds and photographers at the 1/2 way point, and how we were supposed to continue on through that crowd! They tried to give me a medal, but I *declined,* (emphatically!) trying to explain that I was desperately looking for the rest of the course. They must have thought I was completely insane. I shrugged off the photos, argued with finish line folks, and frantically tried to retrace my steps. After about a mile of that, I found an official who explained that the split-off point was almost 4 miles away as the crow flies so *had* I tried, I would have run well-over 30+ miles, without a shot at ever making the finish line cut-off (within hours, even). At that point, I had a good pity party, and walked, alone, dejectedly, to my mother-in-laws house. I broke in (oh, please - Im from Detroit), showered, and waited for Jamie and the rest of the crew. In one absolutely *UNBELIEVABLE* move, I managed to blow an entire season of training. No finish line, no medal, no cheering. Nothin. My first marathon. DNF. And the best part? It was entirely self-inflicted. See? Told you it couldnt have been more Rachel if I planned it that way. There will be no photos posted.
