Okay folks, theres good news and theres bad news. First though, heres the latest water readings... Allegheny River water temperature at Kinzua Dam: 48 degrees. USACE outflow at Kinzua Dam: 16,900 cubic feet per second (cfs). A cubic foot is about the size of a basketball, so you can imagine 16,900 basketballs per second being released... thats a lot of water. (Normal summer outflow is between 1,400 and 2,500cfs.) As of 9am this morning, we were still 9 feet above summer pool in the Allegheny reservoir. The Corps has been trying their best to accommodate our paddling community and visitors, but it looks like there is just too much water, and tomorrows 100% chance of rain in the forecast isnt helping. With this said, I bring you the bad news. We will most likely NOT be putting boats out on the Allegheny River through Memorial Day weekend. (Possibly Monday, but thatll be determined after tomorrows rain.) Now the good news. What we are planning (depending on the amount of rain we get tomorrow), is to make it a unique paddling holiday weekend, setting up an outpost in two spots along Tionesta Creek, renting canoes/kayaks on two separate sections. If youve never been, the Tionesta is a beautiful little creek thats normally too low to be paddled this time of year, so this is a rare treat! It will be a reservation only shuttle/rental service on Saturday and Sunday, and will run the same way as our Trip #1 (Kinzua to AO), so youre shuttled to your starting point, and ending at your vehicle. Again, this is not set in stone. Well be paddling Tionesta Creek Thursday morning to check out water conditions, but right now its about perfect with clear water ready to be paddled. Well keep you posted as we get closer. Until then, PLEASE STAY OFF OUR FLOODED WATERWAYS. Its a danger to you, and a danger for those that have to go in after you. The Conewango and Allegheny are both very high, and river rescue has been called out to both of them over the last 48 hours. (Everyone is safe, thank goodness.) I know everyone is itching to get out there, but the river will be back down where we all love it next week, so please just hang on until then.
