Okay, so...I have Lung Cancer. Stage IV. Not good. Started in lungs, spread into pleural fluids, lymph nodes, spine and a few other bones. Again, not good. Some of this news has already been released through other folks and venues - especially my exceedingly lovely, loving, talented and thoughtful wife, Jean Peat. I am very humbled by all the thoughts, prayers, concerns, offers of assistance, encouragment, and other expressions of love received by all sorts of kind and thoughtful folks. Jean is trying to keep up with information, etc, but it is quickly becoming a bit of an overwhelming task in light of all the other stuff going on in our lives. Please pray for Jean Peat and Nathaniel Peat in these challenging times. Nathaniel is a freshman at KU with a Chancellor Scholarship, will turn 18 November 28th, and is a great young man. I am so very blessed and proud. This is an extra tough situation on Nathaniel at this stage of his life. Please keep him - and Jean - in your thoughts and prayers. This message is my first personal post/notification about the situation. Im definitely not writing to make a big deal about my condition, but rather to let folks know. I just didnt want anyone to feel left out of the information, if that makes any sense. Everything has happened very quickly. Briefly: I cracked a rib playing basketball in early September, developed pneumonia symptoms a couple weeks later, went through a few series of antibiotics with no improvement and finally went to KU Med Oct 21st. The testing and cancer diagnosis has all happened in the last ten days, and I am scheduled to start initial chemotherapy Nov 5th. I have whats called adenocarcinoma. Were awaiting further information on various genetic mutations which potentially allow more targeted therapies to be added to the soup. The intent of the various therapies will be to potentially prolong life, manage quality, etc., as opposed to achieving cure or eliminating the cancer from my body. Miracles happen, of course, and Im definitely not opposed...but the scientist in me knows how to read the data and statistics. (Check with google for more info on adenocarcinoma and lung cancer if you wish...interesting stuff. I was a non-smoker, btw.) Although I enjoy browsing...I rarely post in Facebook beyond Happy Birthday wishes and the occasional like, and that is unlikely to change. Im guessing this is a long message by FB standards. Thanks for reading...and thanks for being a friend! Love, Raymond Peat
