Okigwe boils as Okorocha’s woman Commissioner slaps a male colleague over APC list *Group calls for her removal February 2, 2014 Barely a week after Mrs. Adaora Ijezie, Commissioner for Economic Planning in the Governor Rochas Okorocha administration and Chief Tony Black Nduka, the Mayor of Okigwe senatorial district were dragged apart from public fisticuffs over the All Progressive Congress (APC) facilitators list for Isiala Mbano council area, another female Commissioner, Lady Nma Onyechere has thrown caution to the wind by slapping a fellow Commissioner and two-time Chairman of Okigwe local government council, Hon. Emeka Okoronkwo twice in public over the same APC facilitators list for Okigwe council area. Lady Onyechere had invited her kinsmen to her office to harmonize the APC facilitators list for their council area but seemingly wanted only her opinions to count at the meeting. This did not go down well with most of her kinsmen, so after a session of arguments , Hon. Emeka Okoronkwo, a Commissioner in the Local Government Service Commission had demanded to see the list of facilitators for his Ihube ward, but Lady Onyechere refused. On Okoronkwo’s persistence on having the list made public, Nma Onyechere had asked him to leave her office. This he viewed as an affront, since issues concerning his community were being discussed and so refused to leave. At that point the Commissioner for Women Affairs stood up and slapped Okoronkwo. As Okoronkwo instinctively queried why he was slapped, Lady Nma Onyechere responded with yet another resounding slap before other kinsmen intervened. Since the incident, Okigwe council area has boiled over as emotions have gone haywire. There have been calls for the immediate sack of Commissioner Nma Onyechere from Rochas Okorocha’s cabinet. Some leaders of Okigwe had also suggested that she be banished from Okigwe council area until she atones for her misdeed. The most recent agitations came from an Okigwe Zonal Women group demanding a public apology to be published in local and national newspapers. The group led by Hon. Mrs. Nkeiru Oluehi, the Transition Committee Chairman of Onuimo council Area in Okigwe Zone over the weekends visited the Chief of Staff, Principal Secretary to the Governor, the Secretary to the Government of Imo state and the Speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly in protest of the action of the Commissioner. The angry women who said the action of Lady Onyechere casts aspersion on them and could further misrepresent what they stand for, also urged Governor Rochas Okorocha to probe the incident and if the Commissioner is found wanting, should be relieved of her duties as her actions portray women in bad light; as people who cannot be trusted with public office, especially at a time they are still agitating for full implementation of the affirmative actions for women. The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Sir Jude Ejiogu urged the women to maintain their calm disposition and assured them that he will bring the matter to the attention of the Governor and believes that the issue will be appropriately redressed.
