Olawale Dibia Ajayi let me say straight away that I align with your thoughts on this subject . Though I know some may try to turn the subject matter of your discuss into another controversial issue and may ask for your head and the heads of those who may abhor the same ideology with you on this issue. However, I think that this is one of the critical areas in our National life that need to be scrutinised and dissected for its own good. I wonder how the founding fathers of the scheme will be feeling right now seeing the debasement of their once noble act. I know some section of Nigeria will feel this piece is an insult on their religious belief. Far from it! I served in the NYSC in the late 80s and I have friends and family who did before me. I and neither they were subjected to this odious and filthiness. If I was asked to interpret the picture above, I will say straight away that the picture above portrays a scheme divided against itself. Where is the re-integration and re-orientation when our youths are held down by religion. How will they be able to be the best they can be if societal norms and religious beliefs are brought into a programme that was conceived supposedly for national development. I wonder how someone wrapped up will be able to perform para-military duties required if called upon to render such duties include rescue and fast response services. Or, how that person will be able to develop inter-personal relationship with others talk less of having a simple conversation and to build trust with his/ her peers. I know some will say it is a reflection of our national life. I say it is not! It is in fact a reflection of lack of direction and drive to improve the systems. Whilst the whole world is make giants strides in science and technology, Nigeria is bogged down by religious and perceptions that does not align with the 21st Century that we are in it. As a unifying scheme, I think the NYSC need to rethink its direction, shed those toga holding it back or face reality and scare the whole thing rather than make a mockery of ourselves. Where this is impossible, I will be suggesting that the predominantly conservative northern Nigeria should be home to the Islamic corpers and the liberal south should be the base for those who are open minded and prepared to truly give a part of them for their country. I guess this will be a easy solution to the division and incoherency that we currently see in the NYSC. It is really annoying how our national heritages are continually and systematically decimated. I wonder if this was the same NYSC that Nigerian graduates and youths across the national look forward to go into with great aspiration and enthusiasm. If those at the elm of affairs have any idea, they will save all of us the ridiculous parade of directionlessness That is my own two pence on this national shame, called youth service scheme
