On 2 December 1914 the 10 troopships of the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force reached Port Said, Egypt, after sailing through the Suez Canal. Troops and horses were disembarked at Alexandria on 3 December. The fees charged for the NZEF troopships to pass through the Suez Canal were £21,975 British pounds. With adjustment for inflation those fees would today equate to £1,840,000 pounds, or $3,697,000 New Zealand dollars. The letter requesting payment, and list of charges per troopship, can be seen here in these Army Department records held at Archives New Zealand.
