On Attachment The non-attachment that is praised in spiritual literature would be more accurately defined as non-clinging or non-craving which occurs naturally once one recognises one’s true essence. For in this case one discovers the happiness (or peace and joy) that is inherent in the core of our being requiring nothing to manifest. Then external ‘things’ can be enjoyed (and loved) without clinging to them and allowed to come and go without grasping, as William Blake says about seeing a beautiful butterfly: ‘He who binds to himself a joy Does the winged life destroy; But he who kisses the joy as it flies Lives in Eternity’s sun rise.’ Colin Drake
