On December 6, at around 5:00 PM, Marc Lépine entered the École Polytechnique killing 14 women and himself, injuring others. His motive was to fight feminism, expressing hatred for women who worked in male-dominated professions. Today is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. I think about the extreme misogynistic attitudes that Lépine had. He may have picked these up from his father, who physically and verbally abused him and his mother. I wonder what his classmates and friends could have done to prevent the radicalization of his attitudes. I think about the pervasive idea that, to be a man, you cannot be feminine, and the everyday degradation of that which is girly. This might lead to someone thinking of themselves as naturally better then women. Today is a great day to wear a white ribbon, and start a conversation (or a few!) on the topic of violence against women. Here is an event in Kingston: https://facebook/events/708180015945477/?ref=br_tf And below is a great discussion of a way to approach the issue of violence against women.
