On Friday, January 16, 2015, the Umatilla County Search and Rescue (SAR) Team held their annual potluck dinner and awards ceremony. In addition to the good food, the highlights of the event were the special recognitions to our great volunteers, their families, and all other supporters of the program. Sheriff Rowan and Sergeant Johnson presented the following awards: Volunteer of the Year – Bill Morris Certificates of Appreciation – Dalton Cash, Robert Cash, Josh Dimock, Bob English, Josh English, Danielle Gibbons, Julie Hendren, Jan Good, Dean Groshong, Travis Lundquist, Bill Morris, Cheryl Post, Rick Pullen, Jonathan Quinlin, Kevin Schneiber Special Recognition, SAR Advisory Board – Robert Cash, Bob English, Jan Good, Dean Groshong, Kevin Scheibner Special Recognition, Most Missions in 2014 – Jan Good, SAR Coordinator Sergeant Johnson also read a Letter of Commendation from Pendleton Mayor Phil Houk and the City of Pendleton regarding the successful, life-saving rescue mission of Mr. Richard Braatz in November 2014. During that incident, UCSO SAR led the mission, and received assistance from the US Army National Guard stationed in Pendleton, the US Forest Service, the Walla Walla Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, and the City of Walla Walla. Lieutenant Colonel Alan Gronewold and Chief Warrant Officer Donald Ford from the Oregon Army National Guard attended the dinner and received a plaque with our appreciation from Sheriff Rowan. The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit perform an invaluable service to the community by providing a professional, organized, mostly volunteer search and rescue team that is devoted to helping lost and missing persons, overdue hunters, stranded motorist, and others. They also provide aid in medical emergencies and perform many other types of search and rescue missions. SAR team members also assist our UCSO deputies and other law enforcement agencies at major crime scenes and are available to assist search and rescue teams in other jurisdictions, both regionally and throughout Oregon and Washington, whenever they are needed.
