On Jan 29, 1954, after a receiving 64-inches of snow over the previous week, and 62 inches of snow on the ground, a location near Rogers Pass recorded a low temperature of -70F. This is the coldest temperature of record in Montana and in the lower 48 states. This established a new all-time low for Montana. The previous low was -66F at West Yellowstone set Feb 9, 1933. Low temperatures had been in a range of -22 to -37 for the week preceding this lowest temperature. The high temp at Rogers Pass on Jan 20, 1954 was -22F, a rise of 48 degrees from the overnight low. The observers reported that their cabin was making all sorts of popping and creaking noises during this cold night.
