On January 9th, Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. will hold a press conference at 12 noon in support of law enforcement in City Hall Council Chamber (80 Broad Street). Those citizens who appreciate law enforcement and are discouraged by national events portraying law enforcement in a negative light are encouraged to take time to come show their support. The National Fraternal Order of Police has partnered with the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S) and law enforcement associations across America, including the Charleston Police Department and its 458 sworn officers, in observance of National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day scheduled for January 9th, 2015. In light of recent events directed toward law enforcement nationally, there is a need to show law enforcement officers that our citizens recognize the difficult career they have chosen, in public service to us all. What the public sometimes doesn’t see is the price law enforcement officers pay to keep our community safe. On average, between 105 and 203 officers die in the line of duty each year nationally and 50,000 officers are assaulted in the line of duty each year, 14,000 officers are injured in the line of duty each year, and over 300 officers commit suicide each year. These are painful and difficult statistics. Being a law enforcement officer truly is a challenging and demanding job. An officer must be professional, courteous, caring and yet be ready to protect the public at all times. They must be prepared to make life and death decisions in a moment’s notice. They take an amazing amount of abuse at times, but have to view this abuse as just “part of the job.” Law enforcement officers play an integral part in our society. Without law enforcement officers, life would be chaotic and dangerous. Think about what you would do if you were in trouble – a car accident, a home invasion, an assault – and you did not have someone to call for help? Law enforcement continues to do their job, and do it well. They are the guardians of our way of life and they deserve our support.
