On July 1, 1913 the first transcontinental road the Lincoln Highway was incorporated. The road traveled from Times Square in New York City to San Francisco traveling through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming along it’s way through the central U.S. Much of it was an upgrading of existing but rather crude dirt roads already in existence. Bringing in crushed gravel and building bridges was a big deal as autos had a tendency to get mired in the mud in the early days of road travel. (Mules had much better traction) We are used to seeing paved roads everywhere but it’s been only one hundred years. Before that the main transportation arteries were either rail or river. Members of the Tappmeyer family should be familiar with the Lincoln Hwy. They have passed over it many times while they lived in Iowa without even realizing it. The Lincoln Hwy is old Hwy 30 that runs from Clinton Iowa on the Mississippi River west to De Witt and Mt. Vernon, than on past the south part of Cedar Rapids, Iowa on its way through Tama, skirting past Marshalltown, and Ames. In western Iowa it goes through Carroll and Denison, before turning south toward Missouri Valley and crosses the Missouri at Blair, Nebraska. I have probably traveled the section west of Cedar Rapids a few hundred times as a kid back in the early 70’s. drive2.subaru/Sum05_Feature.htm
