On June 27, 2014, at approximately 11:46 PM, Deputy Ty Lorenz was on routine patrol and observed an individual on a yellow scooter leaving the Midtown Discount Tire located in Midtown, TN. Because the individual was observed at the business after hours, Deputy Lorenz determined that it was suspicious behavior and decided to investigate the manner. Deputy Lorenz observed the scooter drive across the highway and turn onto Old Highway 70 at a high rate of speed without a working headlight and appeared that the operator was carrying several large items. Deputy Lorenz then activated his emergency equipment to initiate the traffic stop as the scooter turned onto Sycamore Dr. Harriman, TN and that is when the operator of the scooter tossed a vehicle rim in a nearby ditch then continued to accelerate at a high rate of speed refusing to stop. After a brief pursuit, the operator of the scooter looked over his shoulder in attempt to see the location of Deputy Lorenz and that is when the operator lost control of the scooter and wrecked on the shoulder of the road and as the scooter wrecked a second vehicle rim rolled away indicating the operator had it in his possession as he attempted to evade. Shortly thereafter, the operator was identified as Mitchell Justin Roberts. A preliminary investigation indicated that Mr. Roberts had indeed stolen the vehicle rims from Midtown Discount Tire after receiving confirmation from the business owner. Mr. Roberts was placed under arrest for theft, driving on revoked license, evading arrest, and tampering with evidence.
