On March 31, 1917, the United States took possession of the Danish West Indies after paying Denmark $25,000,000, and then renamed the territory the United States Virgin Islands. To put that in perspective, Citigroup, Inc. pays $20,000,000 or so per YEAR for naming rights (not ownership) to the stadium where the New York Mets play baseball. The Virgin islands are almost 134 square MILES of islands in the Caribbean. Citi Field is a 1.2 million square FEET complex in Queens, NY. Contemplate that for a bit.
