On November 10 AGLA hosted a guest speaker, Tara McKenzie Allison, Esquire, transgendered Woman, former Naval Officer, and LGBT Activist, at our annual potluck. This presentation discussed transgenderism from the viewpoint of a transgender woman - from a basic understanding of transgender terminology and concepts, through real-life experiences and issues faced by transgender people, such as the psychological realities of growing up and living as trans, coming out, and acceptance and rejection by family, friends, and coworkers. Discrimination and harassment, as well as other realities, such as employment issues and concerns were discussed. Issues related to transgender individuals serving in the military were addressed. The presentation ended with an extensive Q&A Session. The audience left with a greater appreciation for the difficulties and hurdles (both psychological and sociological) that transgender people routinely face.
