On Saturday August 30th last a Ukraine Air Alliance, Antonov An-12BK (UR-DWF) crashed into high-ground shortly after take-off from Tamanrasset (Algeria) en route to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea with the loss of all 7 crew........The 46 year old (Juy 1968) four-engine turboprop civilian cargo aircraft had passed over Dublin at 8am the morning before (Fri 29 Aug) as it prepared to land at Shannon Airport arriving from Ukraine. Having left Shanno it routed to Prestwick, Scotland, where it took on board a cargo of oil drilling equipment destined for Equatorial Guinea.......Departing prestwick at 4pm the An-12 flew to Ghardaia, Algeria for a technical stop which included refueling from where it travelled on to Tamanrasset, Algeria where it again uplifted fuel.......It was upon leaving Tamanrasset at 2.41am on Saturday morning that radio contact was lost with the aircraft 3 minutes after take-off and the wreckage was later found 8 miles south of the airport, the aircraft having apparently struck high ground shortly after take-off, killing the seven crew, 6 Ukrainian and 1 Russian...... First delivered to the Soviet Air Force in July 1968 and then served with the Ukrainian Air Force until starting civilian freight operations with Scorpion Air in 2003, then with Aero Charter in 2007, Meridian in 2010 and finally with Ukraine Air Alliance from May 2012....... May they rest in peace & sympathy to their families....... Photos by Peter Bakema & bhxflightguide.blogspot
