On September 4, 2013, ten members of the Southside Rotary Club did a vocational visit to Corpus Christi Metro Ministries in order to learn more about the many services offered to our community. Metro Ministries has been serving the poor and homeless since 1982, and they are well-known for their Loaves & Fishes Ministry where nutritious meals are served every Monday through Friday to those in need. But there is even more happening at Metro Ministries than most realize! From touring the campus with Executive Director Patty Clark and Development Director Annie Ramirez, visitors had the opportunity to witness four additional components of Metro Ministries including: the Gabbard Memorial Health Clinic (offering primary health care, medication, and eye care to the homeless, poor, and working poor), the Vineyard Social Services & Employment Assistance Center (providing clothing, hygiene products, job training, counseling, and homeless prevention assistance), the Rustic House Shelter for Men (transitional housing and emergency shelter for homeless men who are mentally ill, physically disabled, or elderly), and the Rainbow House Shelter for Women and Children (transitional housing and emergency shelter for homeless women and their children). In order to fulfill their mission of creating a community that is free from hunger and homelessness, the 23 staff members of Metro Ministries are also supported by volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, counselors, musicians, chaplains, child care workers, community service organizations, and benefactors. It was inspiring to see how so many members of the Corpus Christi community collaborate in order to provide a full continuum of care for those in need. Residents utilizing the five programs together offered by Metro Ministries have a 90% success rate of moving into permanent housing, gaining employment, and living as productive members of the community. Transitional housing programs are only offered to those who are willing to work, go to school, and are committed to on-going transformation of the mind, body, and soul. Residents also learn to serve each other through participating in daily community chores and responsibilities. Please consider spending a lunch hour with Corpus Christi Metro Ministries to see the great work being done there. Tours are offered the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 12pm and lunch is provided. Group tours are also available by appointment. A Big heartfelt Thank You to Corpus Chriti Metro Ministries for taking so much of their time to show us around and help us appreciate all the amazing work they do in our community!
