On Sunday, Sept 21, at 1PM, Premier Kathleen Wynne will be hosting a 1hr program called The Province on CFRB 1010. Whether or not this will be a phone-in I do not know But if it is I will try to get in and ask the premier what I think is a very important question regarding how this province -especially at the municipal level- is governed. My concern is the 4-year term. Four years is too long to attract any candidates other than retirees and the under-employed. As has been seen in Toronto, there is no mechanism for recalling those whose behaviour is detrimental to area they represent. I could cite any number of other reasons we should cut the term back to 3 -if not two- years. One of the reasons this will probably never happen though lies in the number of people who actually bother to vote. The numbers seem to shrink with every election. If so few people care to cast a ballot every four years, how many would care to go to the polls every two years? In short, it seems wed rather be stuck for four years with entrenched mediocrity than mark a ballot every two years. And so it goes. The Municipal Act is wherein all this lies. If Lou Rinaldi really wants to help his small-town base, he could do worse than bring this anti-democratic four year tenure to the fore by way of a Private Members Bill. At least start getting it talked about. Maybe even leave it up to the individual municipality instead of a blanket provincial dictate. Anyway -tomorrow at 1PM. CFRB 1010.
