On Sunday a few dozen Palestinians took advantage of the short cease fire in Gaza and went out to the streets to protest against the continuing conflict in the region. Standing on the rubble that once was their houses they pointed fingers to both sides; Not only on the Israeli forces which bombed their neighborhood, but also to their own elected government, the Hamas party, which used their homes for bunkers, ammunition storage and booby traps for invading forces. Hamas, an organization which is recognized in the US and in the EU as a terrorist organization, decided to take action. Although it see itself as a people movement and proudly declares in every opportunity that it was democratically elected to govern the people of Gaza, it decided to Disperse the demonstration in the only way it knows. They rounded 20 Palestinian protesters and publicly executed them on the false accusations that they are Israeli spies. 20 bodies laid on the street, and the demonstration vanished. Sadly, this isn’t the first time that Hamas decided to gun down its own people, it happened every time that the people of gaza had the civil courage to stand against their oppressing government. For 23 days now, the plateau of gaza is in blaze, innocent people from both side of the border are getting hurt, children been traumatized. For 23 days my country is fighting a terrorist organization. We entered gaza as a last resort ,to stop deliberate threat on our lives. We don’t want to conquer gaza, we want to stop the lurking terror which sits on our border, who terrorize Israelis and Palestinians alike. People judge Israel on bombing terrorist bases in highly populated areas, but forget that the British bombed Dresden, the American bombed japan. People forget that there is a price for protecting your way of life, and sometimes you need to make hard and unpopular decisions to protect the ones you love. Churchill knew it, Roosevelt knew it , sadly I know it as well. I know it sounds like i am a hawkish fellow. But to be honest, I’m quite pro-Palestinian who truly believes in the two state solution, I just don’t believe that peace can be achieved when the other side (Hamas) doesnt recognize your right to exist. I hope that sustainable peace will arrive as soon as possible, and all countries in The region will prosper. Shai
