On Sunday, the ALP announced it would instruct Queensland’s Hospital and Health Services to employ 4000 graduate nurses over four years, guaranteeing each new nurse 12 months’ employment. Far too many new graduates are still finding it extremely difficult to find employment, and many are currently being employed in temporary positions and only receiving a few shifts per week. While we welcome this announcement, there is more work to be done. We believe in developing a workforce plan to assist graduates with securing permanent employment, not just contracts. Graduate nurses are a precious resource, and should be viewed as a long-term commitment to our health system, not a short-term cost. Click the link below to read the QNU’s full response.
