On Sunday, we accompanied friends on the Architectural Boat Tour - TopicsExpress

On Sunday, we accompanied friends on the Architectural Boat Tour down the Chicago River. Its easily my favorite tourist thing to do in Chicago. Ive taken it dozens of times, because I renew my love of my city every time I take it. The Boy, 11 years old, was going under protest. Ive already been. Why should I learn something twice? And I dont care about architecture. After making the case for re-learning and architecture, and having it fall upon deaf ears, I finally said in frustration, Well, Boy, you say you dont want to learn about this, but you never tell us what you DO want to learn about outside of school. And he said, Heres what I want to learn about. And immediately ticked off on his fingers, Who invented tinted windows? How were the first newspapers invented? And why do people live in cities in the first place? So tonight Ive looked up that 3M filed the first patent for window film, and am looking for an age-appropriate history of newspapers on Amazon, and have checked the times at the Chicago History Museum because we have some time next weekend. And have discovered that you can tour the Chicago Tribune printing facilities, which we should probably do now before its too late. Because, well...goddamn, those are good questions.
