On Tuesday, September 30, 2014, Louisiana State Police Troop A along with the LSU Interim Hospital honored a mother and son who made the life changing decision to properly wear their seat belts. By taking the time to buckle up and by putting her 5 year old son properly in a child safety seat, Karen Beason and her son walked away from a serious crash on Airline Hwy. in Prairieville. The “Saved by the Belt” award was given to Karen and her son Jack in front of Jack’s classmates at Galvez Primary School in Ascension Parish (Karen is also a teacher at the school). The program is designed to identify individuals whose lives are saved or injuries significantly reduced because they were properly wearing a seat belt or were properly restrained in a child safety seat at the time of a crash. The Beason’s were without a doubt saved from serious injury because they made the important decision to wear their seat belts. Motor vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death and disability for people ages 1 to 34 and are the leading cause of injury related deaths among people of all ages. Last year, over 72,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana. Louisiana law requires all occupants, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained. Crashes can happen at any time, on any day and the greatest chance of surviving a crash is to buckle up.
