On Unions. Please read if you have a few minutes to think - or debate. Thanks Tom Szirtes for articulating this so clearly (and better than I could) On Unions (my first post of a few). Unions are good things, they should be cherished and protected - whether they are with our neighbours in Scotland or with the Europeans or in the UN. Isnt that the utopia that we should be all striving for? We know we will never get there, they like any relationship they need working on and involve compromise, but the alternative in this modern world is unimaginable. People have such short term memories and have become complacent. They forget that Scotland and England were at frequent war for centuries, Europes last world war sixty years ago with millions of deaths. The EU and British Union have brought stability to these regions ever since their formation - they arent perfect but they are a hell of lot of better than before. Throwing that away because you dont like a few more immigrants living near you or dont happen to like a some Tory governments cuts is incredibly narrow sighted and dangerous. In fact we need Unions more than ever. Geopolitical power bases are shifting, the era of Pax-American is drawing to a close. We are seeing the era of new large multipolar world with countries that dont share our democratic values rise and jostle for influence in an increasing competitive drive for valuable resources. Divide and conquer will be the name of the game. If the little Englanders, little Scotlanders (or any other country) have their way Europe will be become a back water of squabbling nations played off each as pawns in a global game of chess much like the Middle East has been for the last hundred years. Scotland will be a foreign country sitting on English borders the first time in three hundred years, having no say in affairs they once had direct representation in. So lets have less borders, more unions and greater engagement in them!
