On Wednesday January the 15th at approximately 12:06am Franklin County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Georgia Crossing Road adjacent to Hawkins Cove Road in reference to a vehicle in the ditch along the roadside. Upon arrival deputies made contact with James Robert Byrd (White/Male 35 Sherwood Road Sewanee, Tn.). A report file by deputies did state that Mr. Byrd was standing outside his vehicle when they arrived. Deputies then proceeded to conduct a field sobriety test and subsequently placed Mr. Byrd under arrest for DUI. Mr. Byrd was then transported to Southern Tennessee medical Center for a blood draw in conjunction with the DUI charge. Mr. Byrd was then transported and booked into the Franklin County Jail at approximately 1:16am. When corrections personnel begin to serve breakfast at approximately 5:45am they did observe Mr. Byrd to be unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel were then notified and responded to the Franklin County Jail. Mr. Byrd was pronounced dead by the county medical examiner and an autopsy was ordered. There is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division. Further information regarding this incident will be released as deemed pertinent and necessary.
