On Wednesday, November 5th National Park Service and Department of Health employees took part in a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Incident Command Systems (ICS) training. The training was put on by Healthcare Association of Hawaii (HAH) Emergency Services. Almost 20 people participated in the 2-day CERT/ICS training. HAH’s Disaster Medical Assistance Team provided training on disaster preparedness, disaster medical, search and rescue, disaster psychology and terrorism. The training was tested with a half-day disaster scenario that incorporated the Kalaupapa ambulance and the new satellite radio equipment installed by HAH in the park. Victims were triaged and evacuated out of a collapsed building. Using the triage system, serious victims were moved out of the disaster area by the ambulance. The National Park Service, the State of Hawaii Department of Health and Healthcare Association of Hawaii Emergency Services all collaborated to find new ways to make Kalaupapa National Historical Park safer and more prepared for the next disaster.
