On a cheery, Sunday, note I just saw a segment of segment on the History Channel entitled You Dont Know Dixie. ;) I didnt watch the whole thing for fear Id find SOMETHING offensive and lose my cheeriness. You know me.:/ It featured notable celebs of Southern origin such Herschel Walker and Jeff Foxworthy commenting on many things. But this was about, of all things Southern, pigs. Where food is concerned, it is true. My sainted mother used to say of the pig, You an eat everything but the oink. And the program went on to show how true this is. It was delightful. I had never heard of pig ear sandwiches. The best part was that pigs were known to have invaded the South before the settlers. They SAID Hernando DeSoto released a number of pigs in Tampa, Florida, on his explorational journey to discover the Mississippi River. WRONG! Tampa Bay locals know the National Monument which commemorates the landing place of Desoto lies on the south side of the Bay near Bradenton (my hometown) but sometimes editing is necessary for the worldwide audience, we realize. I never knew we were the locale responsible for introducing pigs upon North America - cool.
