On a day when Syrian refugees in Lebanon are freezing under gusty rain, hail and snow, an anguished reaction in our Beirut office to the shooting in France - 12 killed at a magazine has published satirical images of the Prophet Mohammad, as video from the scene reveals shouts of God is Great in Arabic. First we look at each other and imagine someone with a gun entering our office angry at something weve written, and thoughts go to journalists all over the world. Then a Muslim colleague expresses horror that an atrocity is committed in the name of Islam, even more so close to the holiday of the Prophets birthday. We worry about countless Syrian refugees seeking asylum in Europe: Will this make it even harder? About Muslim immigrants in France. And about Syrians writ large, as extremist Islamists continue to suck up the worlds attention, leaving the countrys broader conflict to become a neglected, routine disaster of death, destitution and destruction.
