On national day of Moldavian republic(August 27th) we post some illustrations from the book National folk costumes from Moldavia (1960) published in Kishinev (Chisinau) ,by A.M. Zebina and M.Y. Livshits. We can see here patterns from blouses, rugs, belts and skirts that present similarities with the Romanian ones. The territory of Moldavian republic was part of the Moldavian historic province during the medieval times so it was a Romanian territory. After the Turkish-Russian war (1806-1812) this territory was taken by the Russian empire which started a campaign, forbidding the Romanian language (1867) and encouraging populations relocation and mixing. The territory went back to Romania several times , either partially or totally,as in 1856 or 1918,but got back to Russia, becoming a Soviet Republic after 1945.In 1991 it got its independence and stated the Romanian as official language. Nowadays there are the province of Moldavia in Romania (between the Carpathian mountains and the river Prut) and the independent Moldavian Republic, better known as Basarabia to the Romanians.Credits for photo:ebay
