On the 31st October 1793, five tumbrils bore to the Parisian - TopicsExpress

On the 31st October 1793, five tumbrils bore to the Parisian guillotine twenty former members of the National Convention, the Girondists [some came from Gironde in south-west France], for the crime of demanding an inquiry into the massacres of September. I have always been struck by the statement made during the debate about the inquiry made by their leader, Pierre Vergniaud: Citizens, we have reason to fear that the Revolution, like Saturn, will successively devour all its children, and finally produce despotism, with the calamities that accompany it. Johnny Clegg references the idea, eternally following every revolution.
