I have followed this situation for various reasons (my children go to school with your children, my property values mirror yours, etc. etc.). One observation I will make is this recent vote, though one side prevailed, was basically a tie. I cannot vote in HVLA elections, so I hope folks dont misunderstand my post and assume I lean one direction or another. What I DO hope to convey is that when such a small number of voters turn out, and such a close margin is the result, the wise victor doesnt assume the issue is closed and expect all involved to move on. The wise victor acknowledges the close race and realizes that in order to win in the future, he/she will need to work hard to convince the community that their way is the best way. To expect those that lose in such a close vote to simply accept defeat and move on is not only naive, but foolish and dangerous as well. This was a victory for those who lost in that their voices are being heard now more than ever before. History has shown us that this type of election result often serves to strengthen and galvanize. Now is the time for strong, positive community leaders on both sides to rise above the negativity of social media and work hard to enlist their community - especially those that did not vote in their favor. Public perception is a huge factor, and the community appears to be split right down the middle. Now more than ever its anyones ballgame, only its not a game. Its our community. And make no mistake, e v e r y b o d y is watching. May the best, most truly inspired and community-minded leaders and issues prevail.
